16 months...? and iPads? (Lvlnd pt2 wk#21)

Hola!

Sooooo on Friday, May 22nd we had a mission conference! Since I came out Jan 22nd, that was exactly 16 months! Super crazy... Elder Nielson of the Seventy and Brother Kelly Mills of the Missionary Department taught us for 4 hours how to use technology well. It was actually pretty awesome. They described Elder Russell M Nelson's input on why they are giving us iPads: to inoculate us! (he was a cardiologist & heart surgeon by profession) They are giving us enough technology so that we can learn how to use it effectively for the rest of our lives. The alternative is to keep us quarantined from technology and be exposed to it in potentially lethal quantities after the mission. For that purpose, we got two booklets on being safe while using technology and doing missionary work in the digital age. The biggest thing I think most people (including myself) struggle with in using technology is doing so without a purpose. It recommends, "Turn on your device only after your intention is clear." That is a great idea! And when you catch yourself not doing anything on the device, get off!

Shortly after the conference we had another meeting and were all given an iPad mini 2 (except those going home within a month didn't and those going home before December got a loaner church-owned one). So I have an iPad now! While we will continue to respond on Monday, We can now check our email whenever we have internet access! It's pretty fancy!

Moving on... Missionary work!

We had a series of miracles this week that built up into a really awesome miracle!! Let's begin... on Tuesday while driving to a missionary meeting at 11am, we called up this really nice family - the Turners - to see if they could have us for dinner that night. On the phone, Sister Turner said she felt prompted to call us and see if we had dinner plans that night in her morning prayer! Pretty sweet! Then when we got to the church building, the carpets were being cleaned. Since Elder Proffit had served in that area before, he called up a SUPER nice lady to borrow her house for the meeting - and she said yes! :) It was ironically one of the most productive ones we have had. I should have realized that all the carpets were being cleaned that day... but we drove over to a different church building for a lesson with Kellen only to realize the carpets were being cleaned there too! Since I had talked to the Turners that morning about eating dinner with them and we were close to their house, I called them last second to teach Kellen at their house. Fortunately, they agreed and we taught him a really awesome lesson on some commandments. At the end of the lesson, Kellen selected the next day (Wednesday) to meet up again. The Turners again opened up their house, so we set up the appointment with him for 230pm and texted our other investigator Jen setting her with 330pm also at the Turners.

In the afternoon on Wednesday, I realized I had not submitted Loveland's service hours to the mission office as I was planning to on Monday or Tuesday. Shortly before Kellen's appointment, we went to the Family History Center in Loveland to submit them. A fairly recent convert (within 3 years) from the ward, Chris, was indexing records there. That was the first time he ever had indexed records before. He was free (and the internet went down while we were there) and came with us to both Kellen's and Jen's appointment. We again taught Kellen a great lesson about other commandments; He even asked us about tithing so that he could start right away! Fortunately, he was able to stay for Jen's appointment too. When Jen arrived we had a bunch of people there! Chris, Kellen, the Turners, and us two missionaries. WOW. It couldn't have been much better. After getting to know Jen a bit (she grew up in Southeast Idaho as a non-mormon meaning she was nearly the only non-mormon in her school), Chris shared with Jen some of the incorrect things he was taught about the church. It turns out Jen was told by her mom, "Never talk to people like that (pointing to Mormon missionaries in a white shirt and tie)!" and lots of other unhelpful things. Kellen shared some of the things he was taught growing up and his experiences in the last week receiving an answer to his prayer. In this half-hour lesson, she found out that it was OK and common to have been taught negative and untrue things about the church. Though she grew up with tons of Mormons, before meeting with us in January she had NEVER talked to missionaries. This month, she has become comfortable enough with us to meet without her friends at people's houses who she has never met! It is amazing to see her growth. That night she texted us saying how helpful that meeting was, "Both to hear [Chris and Kellen] talk about their thoughts, feelings, and everything was extremely helpful." :) It is wonderful to have that response!

As you can tell from that somewhat brief recounting, there was a series of events that led up to that lesson with Jen, Kellen, Chris, and the Turners. If it weren't for the carpet cleaning, we wouldn't have taught a lesson at the Turner's home on Tuesday or Wednesday. If it weren't for Kellen saying, "ya tomorrow would be great" he couldn't have helped Jen. If it weren't for Chris indexing at the family history center or me forgetting to submit the service hours, he wouldn't have come with us. Additionally, the reason Chris came that specific day to do indexing is a long story in of itself spanning months. But, it can be backed up even more than that! How everything worked out was DEFINITELY a miracle! It is so AMAZING to look in our lives and see how "random" people are placed in it and "random" events happen that lead to "random" coincidences. When you look back, you can see that those events must have been orchestrated in order to work out perfectly.

Closing comments... Kellen is VERY excited to be baptized this weekend. We are super pumped for him! :) I have continued to have great study sessions, so much so that on exchanges this week, the missionary I was with decided to have better ones! I was reading that morning in 4 Nephi. The day before I read verse 3: "And they had all things common among them; therefore there were not rich and poor, bond and free, but they were all made free, and partakers of the heavenly gift." I wondered, "Can we be truly free without having everything in common?" because socialism hasn't proven super effective... That morning, in rephrasing and pondering that question, I found the answer! It was in the verse right before, verse 2: "And it came to pass in the thirty and sixth year, the people were all converted unto the Lord, upon all the face of the land, both Nephites and Lamanites, and there were no contentions and disputations among them, and every man did deal justly one with another." With those two verses together, we have the formula for freedom!! Step 1: "The people were all converted to the Lord." Step 2: "There were no contentions and disputations" Step 3: "They had all things in common" Step 4: "They were all made free." Later in 4 Nephi, after over 100 years of peace, happiness, and prosperity, pride comes in. People became less converted to the Lord, had contentions, classes were formed, and the society wasn't free anymore. The coolest part to me is that these scriptures reiterate the simple truth: the Gospel is the solution. As we choose to TRULY live the Gospel (Develop Faith in Christ, Repent, are Baptized, Receive the Holy Ghost, and Endure to the End) and help others do the same, we will begin to experience true peace, happiness, and joy in our lives and for the eternities. When we as a people choose to Love God and Love our Neighbor (in that order), the world will be SUPER AWESOME (for reals).

Have the best week of your life!! :)

Best Week Ever!! (Lvlnd pt2 wk#20)

Hi everyone!!

*exhale. Finally a week I'm actually proud of! (Super funny. Right when I was starting to write this, I'm made aware of a problem in the zone here in Loveland that could be really bad if it isn't fixed... ironic!).

Back to the good stuff of the week. So we pulled off meeting with Kellen Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday this week. Describing all of those appointments would take too long. Suffice to say he has proven to be very sincere. He prayed Wednesday to know if what we were teaching him is true and he received the answer that it is! So on Friday he selected his baptismal date to be May 30th. We are excited. There is something to this whole "be in daily contact with the people you are teaching" thing. He has diligently been studying, going through the reading material, sincerely praying, and more. We showed him the baptismal font in the church building after church yesterday. We are meeting with him next tomorrow!

Other cool stuff. I finally committed to studying for a full hour everyday and did so this entire week. Wow... not only were we able to have one of the best weeks teaching Kellen and helping him find out the truth of our message for himself, but I also was the most diligent I have ever been in studying the scriptures and the most recent General Conference talks. A lot of the things I have wanted to change all came together in one week to produce pretty miraculous results.

I definitely have a testimony that God answers prayer. In addition to all the insights that I gained in studies this week, there was one other thing I learned at church that finally really clicked. It is from this selection of scripture in chapter 1 of the Book of Moses in Pearl of Great Price:

8 And it came to pass that Moses looked, and beheld the world upon which he was created; and Moses beheld the world and the ends thereof, and all the children of men which are, and which were created; of the same he greatly marveled and wondered.

9 And the presence of God withdrew from Moses, that his glory was not upon Moses; and Moses was left unto himself. And as he was left unto himself, he fell unto the earth.

10 And it came to pass that it was for the space of many hours before Moses did again receive his natural strength like unto man; and he said unto himself: Now, for this cause I know that man is nothing, which thing I never had supposed.

Someone mentioned at church that Moses saying "man is nothing" didn't mean that we are worthless, but that we are powerless. Our very life force and energy is given to us by God. Moses discovered that for himself as he fell to the earth. I learned that personally this week as I prayed for the ability to wake up in the morning. I had a strong desire to study yesterday during the day, though I had lots of meetings beginning at 7:30am. I wanted to wake up and be awake when the alarm went off so I could do that. I woke up literally 30 seconds before the alarm went off! It was perfect. That happened today and another time this week too. For some reason I thought that there was a direct connection with the amount of sleep I get and how awake I am in the morning (and the rest of the day). I found out there is a connection, but it isn't a perfect cause and effect.

That is because God can make up the difference. He can give us the strength to continue, the ability to wake up, and more. We can push beyond our capacities with the strength of God. That was SOOOO COOL to realize. So many times in my life I have miraculously woken up or been awake just long enough to pull everything together. There had been times in college when I woke up jut in time to make it on time to a test. I woke up without an alarm just on time with just a couple hours asleep to catch a flight to General Conference a few years ago. Over and over God has helped me be just awake enough at the right time. Finally I am recognizing that is because it is His Spirit that enables me to work and live every day! I have heard and agree that when we are in the hereafter, we will be humbled by the amount that God's hand was in our lives without us recognizing it.

--> Also, Jen made it to church with us this week and has been growing a lot.

Have an awesome week! I hope this email finds you well. :)

Elder Jeff Campbell

Transfers Again! (but I never seem to be transferred)

Hi everyone!

So I looked at the transfer information (where all the missionaries will be the next 6 weeks) on Saturday and was shocked. Like 50%+ of the companionships in the mission stayed together including myself and Elder Proffit! So we will be together until mid/end of June. I'm looking at my second nearly 6 month stay in Loveland! haha. I wonder what I'm supposed to be learning! One thing we thought about for why so many are still together is that our mission president and God are trying to help us not wait until our environment changes to change. Rather, we need to change today! Find new people to teach today! Help someone be baptized today! In life, we can't just be transferred away from our problems!! We have to refocus and make it happen! So maybe that's what we are being taught. Though that's just my opinion on that.

For the many of you that know me, I'm not the best at going to bed on time, waking up on time and stuff like that in life in general. Unfortunately that carried over to being a missionary. BUT I have recommitted myself to being TRULY diligent in my mornings and planning sessions. That has made a large difference. I have successfully studied these last 4 days in a row for the full 1 hour. If you couldn't tell, I don't always share insights from studies in my email. That's mainly because I didn't dig deep enough to actually gain an insight that I remembered while I was emailing!! And that is bad. It's hard to tell the negative impact when you study less diligently, but when you recommit and REALLY make it happen... WOW. The results are immediate. You feel WAYYY better (not that I was necessarily feeling bad) and have more joy. *sigh. It's the best. Wouldn't you know it that the day (Friday May 1) that I recommitted to being more diligent is the day that Kellen had a pang of conscious after partying that he needed to do something different. Then we talked to him that Sunday after he said he hadn't slept for a night because he was rethinking his life. Is it a coincidence? I personally doubt it. Every time I have recommitted to being more diligent, a miracle has come out of nowhere. (And we met with Kellen yesterday and earlier today and have another lesson for tomorrow set up! It's pretty promising right now.)

Lastly, I'll leave you with a rather long insight I had in studies. :)

I was reading in 3 Nephi 24 the other day and it blew my mind a little bit. This is the part in the Book of Mormon where Jesus is visiting the people in the Americas. At this moment, Jesus is quoting the prophet Malachi in Malachi 3. The most common thing to take away from that chapter is that if we want to "abide the day of [Christ's] coming" (3 Nephi 24:2 and Malachi 3:2) then we need to not rob God by paying tithes and offerings. As we pay our tithes and offerings it says, "prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of Hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing that there shall not be room enough to receive it." (3 Nephi 24:10 and Malachi 3:10).

However, what hit me most powerfully were verses 13-15. In the New Elder Campbell translation it says, "You have spoken words against me, saith the Lord. Yet you ask, 'what have we spoke against thee?' You have said that it isn't worthwhile to serve me and keep my commandments and live up to the covenants you have made with me. You believe that the proud and wicked and those who tempt me are favored of me because you believe they are succeeding in life while you are not."

How often does that happen to us today? For us in the mission field... it happens a lot. Not all missionaries are diligent in serving God and following Him in the way He has invited us to. Sometimes those missionaries seem to be very "successful" by baptizing people while those who are more strict at doing the things that the Lord has asked us are not having the same "success" in baptizing people. Those that are following the Lord sometimes ask, "Why am I working so hard to follow you without being blessed while those other ones are being blessed by not following you? I'm not going to follow you as closely so then you will bless me." The problem with that interpretation is that we frequently expect immediate results from following Jesus Christ in our lives, but that doesn't always happen. What DOES happen is that we are slowly changed into a true disciple of Jesus Christ and we are on the path back to Him. In the end, we WILL be rewarded in our diligent heed to the Lord's commands. In the eternal perspective when we give up our sins and give our heart to God, He will not disappoint. One of my favorite qualities of our Heavenly Father is that He is a "man of His word" and He follows through on the promises He has made.

I learned a lot in that scripture pondering session! God basically told me, "Stop justifying your disobedience because no immediate results are happening! You receive no witness until after the trial of your faith! Be obedient for reals Elder Campbell!" And I said, "Thank you... my bad..." :)

Have an awesome week!

Elder Jeff Campbell

May the 4th... 2015? (Lvlnd pt2 wk#18)

Hi awesome people!! :)

First... I was totally in this library a year ago... I have spent almost the entirety of the last year in the Loveland, Colorado area! It's been exciting. I was transferred to Loveland the last week of April 2014 and now it's May 2015 and I'm still here!! haha. Somehow 5 weeks have passed again and transfers are coming up on Monday (not Tuesday due to a meeting, so I might not be able to email until next Tuesday).

Hopefully you have had a great week! I don't know what it is about me, but I don't remember most of the week... but I do remember two cool miracles yesterday and a scripture that I read this morning! Enjoy!

So there has been a guy aged 19 named Kellen who has been coming to church almost every week for the past nearly 2 months (so about 5-6 times). He invited himself somehow to church because a girl he likes who is in his geology class is a member. She didn't invite him. It's been interesting... We haven't been able to meet with him because he works full time and goes to school full time, so we just talk to him about the Gospel for a little bit after church when we can. He pulled us aside before church yesterday and said that he stayed up all the last night and wants to start meeting with us after the school year (aka in 1 week)! Yay! Sometimes I have wondered, "Should I push harder extending invitations for him to meet with us?" I am glad that I didn't. I'm glad that the missionaries didn't for me! We are excited for the opportunity. We even invited him then to read some, but he felt like he didn't have time this week. However, the Sunday School class was about scriptures. After church he texted us asking what he could read. :)

Also, we have been meeting with a couple people almost every week after church for a couple months helping them practice to become missionaries. Mainly it is with Angele and her friend Hailey. Sometimes we meet at Angele's house and her brother Alijah and sister Anastasia join. Alijah specifically said multiple times in January and February that he has no interest in becoming a missionary. But yesterday (this being about the 4th time he has joined us), expressed an interest in going!! Super awesome! I'm glad that we made the effort of spending time with him. We didn't ask him, "Are you interested in becoming a missionary?" or tell him, "It is your responsibility to be a missionary, don't you know! You gotta go!" We just had him join with his two sisters and Hailey in practicing teaching the Gospel to each other most Sundays. I was DEFINITELY hoping that would happen and I had faith it would if I kept giving him the opportunity to teach. Unexpectedly, he is a really good teacher! He was the best yesterday. It was impressive!

Lastly, something I learned this week. I was pondering about 3 Nephi 18 in the Book of Mormon. It is a chapter that talks about Jesus Christ sharing the Sacrament - breaking bread and sharing wine - with his disciples. He says to them, "And behold, ye shall meet together oft; and ye shall not forbid any man from coming unto you when ye shall meet together, but suffer them that they may come unto you and forbid them not; But ye shall pray for them, and shall not cast them out... and whosoever breaketh this commandment suffereth himself to be led into temptation." (v. 22, 25). I tried 3x just now digging deep into this scripture, to no avail. I just thought about trying to be more loving and accepting of people - allowing them to join with us and not cast them out. But that is exactly what it says... haha. So ya. Suffice to say I like that scripture. It was good to be reminded that we need to really show love to people and minister unto them.

Have the best week of your entire life!!!

Sincerely,
Elder Jeff Campbell
